A group of seven accused members of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
