British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
