The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
