Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
